Hello all, Firstly, Andy, this is really a great site with some fantastic information - bravo! . Now, the great debate between powders and liquids - a personal annoyance of mine, so please excuse the rant ahead. I thought I'd provide as much info as I can. This is a question that I find comes up again and again. Everyone has a preference, but here are some of the facts. There are 4 main types of laundry detergent available - powder, tablets, liquitabs, liquid. I'm goig to focus mostly on powder vs. liquid as tablets are just ready-dosed powder and liquitabs are ready-dosed liquid. Laundry detergent also comes in 3 different formulars - biological, colour and non-biolo…

I have just bought one of these, it seems to be working alright except that when it finishes it does not seem to beep to tell you it has finish. Is it supposed to notify you, every other washer I have had has done this?

Hi everyone We've just bought the above model washing machine, and I find the User Manual to be less than user friendly. We want to soak soiled cottons in the machine, but I can only see that the Cottons with pre-wash as being the only option. Is Meile's idea of pre-wash the same as Soak?

Hello Andy, I couldnt find a section on discussing Tumble driers on your site but i wondered if you had any suggestions. I have a Condenser dryer in a utility room , and even though I put comfort fabric conditioner in the rinse cycle of the washing machine when I tumble dry the room instead of smelling nicely of fabric conditioner , instead after a while of the tumble dryer being on the room is hot, humid, heavily condensated and doesnt smell of nice fabric conditioner as you think it would but of damp clothes (is the only way i can describe it) - There is a window in the utility room and I do have that open as I have the tumble drier on but most of the time it seems to …

Hello Andy - have you any Idea why on the Hotpoint/Indesit Drums (8kg/9kg) the paddles dont span the whole length from the front of the drum to the rear of the drum? - its almost like they have took a 5kg/6kg drum and extended the depth of it but still using the same length paddles. Does it have any bearing on washing the clothes? - would they wash the clothes any better if the paddles were the whole length of the drum? Do you have an idea why Hotpoint/Indesit have just stuck with the same sort of drum design for years (basic with just holes) when other manufacturers have changed the drum to include features such as a 'bubble' pattern or chevron pattern on the ins…

This 'circular design' Bosch have on the sides of their washing machine , they claim that the design cuts down on noise. Never having a Bosch machine, is this a valid claim? - can the design pattern on the sides of the machine really quieten down a washing machine more than say a hotpoint or indesit that have just elongated vertical lines design? .. or is it just a gimmick for sales / marketing purposes?

I don't know which manufacturer it was in the old days, more than likely Hotpoint, but they used to have listed in the instruction book and in their leaflets and other media (I think even mentioned in TV adverts) that the secret to clean washing was not so much the washing cycle but that it was the rinse cycle that got the clothes clean so they boasted that there were 3 rinse cycles to get your clothes extra clean. So is that a true claim do you reckon? is the secret in the rinsing? - most modern washing machines these days have only 2 rinses, especially on a quick wash (1 rinse and 1 rinse with fabric conditioner)

My Hotpoint WMUD843 was bought in around 2012 - its working fine, but the rubber feet have worn down and metal is showing through the black rubber parts and I am pretty sure as its spinning the noise of the washing machine is transferring to the feet of the washing machine up through the floor and the walls as its spinning and would be a lot quieter and smoother when spinning if it had a set of new rubber feet - has anyone got any ideas how to 'refurbish' the ones that are already on the washing machine at all? - I can get brand new ones of the internet for around 8euro each so thats 8euro x4 = 32euro and then plus postsage, a fair price just for some small parts. And the…

had a lot of Hotpoint's over the years and they have normally shared the same feature that if when it comes to Spin cycle if the clothes are not distributed the machine will not spin the clothes - the drum will deliberate , slow tumbling back and forth until it balances, (or attempts to balance) the load .. if it cant , then thats it with a Hotpoint its a no go, it wont go into a spin .. the cycle just ends and your clothes come out nearly sopping wet - it must be a nightmare for engineers or hotpoint who phone up hotpoint complaining their machines are 'faulty' and not spinning (even if they have written it into the instructions booklet for the machine) - are hotpoint ma…

Did anyone ever have one of these Hoover Keymatic washing machines when growing up. We had one at one time, bought it second-hand in the 80's for around 80quid in a secondhand shop - I bet we thought the future had arrived!

Hi, I need to buy a new washing machine and unfortunately it's going to have to be the cheapest possible. I've narrowed it down to a Beko or an Indesit. Are either of these more reliable than the other? Or is it six & two threes? I know neither will be high quality but I wondered if either is known for particularly good or bad reliability? Many thanks in advance for any help you can give. Best wishes Wayne

Hello Andy for years we have had a ritual of washing (cotton)things like underwear, towels and teatowels and socks even if they are not heavily soiled at 60c just because I read that germs and bacteria can survive temperatures under 60c. But after washing, I personally prefer towels and underwear dried in the tumble drier rather than on the line because they come out nice and soft. But (and I cannot remember how hot a tumber drier get on heat2 ) but is it likely that a Tumble drier gets well over 60c inside its drum when drying clothes? - if this is the case do you think I could lower the temp of the washing machine to say 40c or 30c and that the germs and bacteria will g…

so a lot of new machines in the last 5 years or so , use a tiny amount of water , not even coming up to the height of the top of the paddles/lifters and I get it for economy reasons and that you can heat up a little amount of water quicker than if it half filled the glass door like the ancient washing machines did, and understand that todays washing powders / liquid are more efficient and need hardly any water to do their job these days. However what I cannot get used to is the fact that if the drum is revolving with this little amount of water now, and the clothes dont get nice and saturated/soaked in water like they used to years ago when the water came up to half t…

When you half or quarter load a washing machine drum and it starts washing and 'violently' sloshes the washing around (ie lifter/paddles lifts washing to top of drum and then the washing slams to bottom of drum) could this not damage (this sloshing/slamming action) the garments over time and indeed the paddles of the machine , (or both) - I relise that the proper way to load the drum is not fill it right to the brim of the top of the drum, you have to leave a vertical hand width height of free space dont you? - but if you do that the clothes will slosh and rub against each other (friction - simulation of rubbing the clothes together) to get them clean , but when you half …

Hi My washine machine only needs cold water connected to it to work. It heats the cold water up to the required temperature. For the last 3 years it has been connected to hot water straight from the boiler. Every time it draws water it uses 75 degree water from the gas boiler. Can anyone estimate how much this has cost per load on average and how much it should cost per load if it uses only cold water. I'm trying to claim from the landlord. Thanks

Hello Andy, Just wondered why a couple of features featured on some washing machines in the last 5 years but never seemed to catch on or be fitted into the mainstream washing machines? , where they just gimmicks or used as a selling point maybe or do you think they were useful things and should have been adopted? I think the 3 that stick out at the moment is the Anti-Bacterial/Anti Mould rubber door gasket, and I believe these were fitted to Haier washing machines at one time, wouldnt that have been a great thing to adopt on all washing machines these days? - and then the second thing that sticks out is Titanium Drums which i think Hotpoint had on a couple of models …

when the manufactures put a quick wash feature on a washing machine why can you not load the drum to the full capacity of the machine? So , my particular washing machine is an 8KG model. If I use a 1hr quick wash the maximum allowed to put in the drum is 3kg I think it is. Do they say 3KG maximum because there is fraction of water that goes into the drum on a quick wash than on a full wash and thats why its a quick wash, because more water going in to fill tub = more time? I realise on a quick wash the amount of rinses is cut down to 1 and that the spin is shortened - but what are the consequences if you fill up the drum nearly all the way to the top of the dr…

Just trying to decipher Hotpoint Washing washing machine numbers Our washing Machine is a WMUD843P. So, OK I predict the WM=Washing machine, the U=Ultima(which is what it is) but what is the 'D' for? - its not a Washer/Dryer model ... and I predict the 8=8KG, the 4=1400rpm spin speed, the 3= (im not sure , could it mean revision of the model?) and the P=Polar white (the colour of the machine) what do you reckon?

Hi New member here. Unfortunately, my 10-year-old Bosch is making a very disturbing noise so I am thinking the bearing has gone .Also one of its feet dropped off when I moved it recently and although I tried to screw it back in, the threaded plate got bent somewhat so the foot is now at an angle. The machine is level mind but I don't suppose it will remain secure for long. The choice I have here is to get a repair done or buy a new one and I am thinking that because of repair costs, the latter would make more sense provided I can find a machine which does not have a welded drum unit. Another thing that might be helpful is knowing the number of wash cycles a part…

My first miele washing machine was a W310 which I had 12 years purchased in 2002. All worked well until the drum bearings went. Fearing big repair bills I scrapped the machine and got a WDA110 two years ago. This machine is still of good Miele quality but iv noticed a few things different from my old machine. I don't think the suspension is so good on the new one. Out of balance load detection is not anywhere as good as the old machine. Iv had a instance where the machine tried to spin a load of towels out of balance and the drum has made a thin score mark on the glass door where it hit it. The water cascade over the top inside of the glass door is now missing when the ma…
