Hi, I bought my machine around 7 years ago. Until recently it only had one problem which was repaired under guarantee. Over the last few months, it doesn't always spin out properly at the end of a cycle and the clothes, although not sopping wet, need an extra spin. It is odd that even though it doesn't spin at the end of a wash cycle, if I then set it to "drain/spin" it spins OK. I was looking the Miele site and it seems a service with repairs is around £200. The machine has taken a bit of a battering as for 2 of the 7 years, I ran a B&B and regularly used it 3 or 4 times a day loaded with heavy egyptian cotton bedding (often slightly overloaded). I'm just wondering …

I live on the 23rd floor of a tower block and have recently had my flat refurbished. The housing association have put in connections for a washing machine. Is is worthwhile getting one installed given how high up my flat is? Will I suffer endless problems with low water pressure? Anyone with any experience of this matter would be most welcome to comment.

I have a brand new washing machine and i want to keep it clean and running as efficiently as possible, I am going to only use Ariel Bio Powder with Actilift as it seems to get very good reviews, it`s not cheap i bought some today, a fifty wash at lidl is £9.99 for a 42 wash, at Morrisons it`s £12.49 for a fifty and at Asda it`s only £8.00 for a fifty so guess where i bought it from After how many washes should you do a service wash to clean the inside of your washing machine, most of the information i have read say every month, but should it not depend on how many washes you do a week and how hard your water is. I only do one wash a week and my water is soft, so a ma…

Hi. I bought some Ariel powder and according to the box dosing guide for me it`s normal wash and soft water, so the does is 95ml , my drum is 8kg so add an extra 40ml = 135ml Now the Ariel website recommends 195ml , the website is buggy as hell and keeps crashing in firefox and IE 9.0 So which is right as i don't want to use to much powder and waste money. Thanks John. http://www.ariel.co.uk/Products/DosingGuide.aspx

I was looking at the Ecozone Ecoballs1000 brand Wash Balls for just over £20 from Amazon, they get mostly good reviews and 2-3p per wash is tempting, and since i only do around one wash a week they should last me around 19 years Thanks John.

I have just bought a new Bosch classic 1200 express. I have completed 3 washes, just returned from holiday and whilst the machine was in final spin I heard a noisy rattling sound, I switched the machine off and examined the inside, I thought at first that one of the kids had left a coin in the pocket of their trousers. I found a metal bra bone, which is half circle shape. My wife examined the bras that were in the wash and found one with no bones at all we removed the loose bone and took the washing out which had almost finished anyway. Today we carried out a full wash, when the program started the final spin,, at full speed, something started a rattling sound and I th…

Hi...hope someone can advise? My washing machine is a 2nd hand Hoover washer dryer (about 10 years old) and has been brilliant for 3 years. It has started making a noise while washing and last wash it got pretty bad. So I called a repair man out who, when I span the drum just said 'Oh you can't fix it. I can sell you a new one though etc etc...' and I felt he was just a salesman rather than a repairer. I am an environmental freak and wanted to get it repaired, but he said the bearings have gone and its not worth repairing. He didnt open his tool box or take the lid off the machine. I know this sounds awful but I didnt know whether to trust him or not. Does anyone know i…

All modern washing machines take much longer to wash than they used to. I've written an explanation of why on my main site here - Why does washing machine take so long to wash?

Our Indesit W123 blew up last night. There was a massive bang and then a burning smell. It does not turn on now and I presume it is dead. We had the machine for 5 years and it has been okay, except the odd programme clock spining round continously. I came across the Haier C1460 which Comet are knocking out at £199 in sale. Anyone got one or know of them? There is no reviews on the web. Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

I am looking to buy a washing machine but am feeling rather bamboozled by all the information. Have you considered a spreadsheet for comparing features? I like the sound of Miele quality but am put off by the difficulty in getting spares (just in case) and your comments about the door. Is there a runner up in quality terms? Then I will browse for important features. (AAA, large drum, high speed spin, delay start). I have a budget of £650.

Can you advise as to whether it will in any way prolong the life of a machine if you don't use the maximum possible spin speed...ie if you buy a 1400 but only use it on 1000 will that machine in general last longer than buying one with a max spin of 1000 and using that one at it's highest spin speed of 1000.

Detergent usage is often specified for 4-5kg loads with an additional amount for larger machines. It is only the cottons loads that will generally take the full load though. How much detergent should therefore be added to, for example, a minimum irons load which is set as 3kg max or a woollens load at 2kg max? Should I halve the amount that I put in the 6kg cottons load or do you use the same amount? Never thought about this before and have always loaded the normal amount for hard water, but the machine I have just ordered as a % load/detergent calculation and I therefore need to know what I am reducing the detergent level from!! I also don't want to ruin my new miele mac…

I would just like to say a HUGE THANK YOU for this site. I have a servis machine, must be 4-5 years old, & until last week had been as good as gold (well gold plate). It recently decided to stop spinning so i did the usual: checked filter & drain hose, kicked it hard, all to no avail. My other half then came home & removed the back, pipes, motor & anything else that he could take off, cleaned it wiggled it then put it back, which seemed to work, it now spun again.....but the hose now leaks where he punctured it & the belt falls off when it gets to its "fast spin"!! so once again the back comes off, a new hose, though not one that actually fits p…

Since we moved house a few months ago, our (old) Bosch WFF1201 seems to wash too hot when the boiler is full of hot water. I assume it's best to just use the cold hose for the inlet and disconnect the hot one, but would be really grateful to know if that will be OK for the machine (manual seems no help) Thanks!

I have had a machine now for about 4-5 years which I am needing to replace.....it only cost me £145 in a closing down sale so I guess I have had pretty good use for that price.....it started getting very noisy, then covering my clothes with white (rubbery?) bits and now has started leaking. I have married recently and my husband wanted a Zanussi machine as he has had one in the past which he swears by as being reliable. However I have a minute kitchen and the present machine is only 49 - 50cm depth and all Zanussis we have looked at are out of the question as too deep. Most machines are in fact 59 - 60 cm in depth which would mean we couldn't open the door where our food…

What are the general rules when it comes to how many clothes you place in the machine for each wash? I'm always worried that the machine isn't washing at maximum efficiency because I'm either over-filling the drum with clothes or perhaps not putting enough in. Generally speaking, I tend to loosely pile-in the clothes until they are a little under halfway below the centre point of the drum, thus leaving them plenty of room to circulate in the wash. I have seen other people almost fill the drum with clothes.

Space is very tight for where my machine is to go, my current machine with a width 590mm will go in with a squeeze. So I've resorted to actually measuring machines on show in the like of Currys, Comet, etc, to find a machine a few mm less then 590. I found a Servis machine the M6704 on show at Currys, which whilst being advertised/displayed as 595mm wide is actually about 585mm wide. Looking on the Servis site, personally I would like a M6702s (silver) to go in with the design of my kitchen, but cannot find this on show to actually measure myself. I asked Servis customer help, but they said all machines are the standard width at 595mm, where my experience tells me dif…

I've had my Miele W4446 for 10 months now and I'm more than happy with it. It's never been used for a wash above 40deg. I recently obtained some sachets of Limescale and Detergent remover for my dishwasher, which states it's also good for washing machines. The manual for my machine simply recommends a cotton 95deg wash with detergent (but no clothes). But I was wondering if it's worth putting a dose of the cleaner in instead/as well as. Thoughts?

Are there any companies that you can recommend that remove the old machine and install the new one? I'd like to order from John Lewis but they only have a removal service (and you have to disconnect everything). I'm not really confident enough to know what I'm doing and I'd rather pay for peace of mind and knowing it has all been taken out and installed correctly! I suppose the alternative would be to pay a local plumber - what would be a reasonable charge for this service? P.S. Any update on the Siemens review - I am tempted by this as a cheaper (and lighter!) alternative to Miele because of the hydrosafe feature...

Hi I have a new Hoover Nextra (washer and dryer). The washer has the "turbine" noise as the speed goes up (or down) and the dryer has a rough vibration - kind of like a turning flat tire. These are stacked on top of each other. For my sake and the sake of the people below me, I would like to quiet the machine if possible. I have seen a company that claims anti-vibration pads: http://gviinc.net/ Has anybody had experience with these or other pads that claim the same affect of reducing washer / dryer noise? Any other tips? THanks
