About a year ago, the door on my washing machine wouldn't open after the cycle had finished. This was repaired. Then in broke again and repaired again. Now it's happened again. It started of where it would sometimes open and sometimes not. If it didn't, I'd manually move the programme dial all the way round and this normally would do the trick. Now it's permanently locked! I pull the catch, but nothing happens. Had a repairman round who said it was the pressure switch not releasing and gave me a ridiculous quote to fix it. He then said he'd "bodge it" for half the price by permanently disconnecting the swicth (effectively meaning the door could be opened any time) …

My washing machine has recently started making a *VERY* loud noise, and vibrating violently on fast spin. I took a look over the weekend and the top and bottom concrete blocks were secure, as were the dampers. On the next wash, all was good, i.e. normal noise and vibration. My wife used it again today and the problem re-appeared. The noise is uncomfortably loud in the kitchen, and sounds like a heavy metallic knocking (hard to describe noises, I know!).The clothes came out covered in black marks, and on opening up the machine this evening, the top is covered in a grey dust, I think this is carbon dust from the brushes as there is a concentrated area on the underside of …

I just need some advice please I have a WM52 1000 spin and I think something has gone through the holes in the drum as when the drum is going round I can hear something catching. How easy is it to get it out and if it is left in there could it cause any damage?

I have an old washing machine and I think I probably overloaded it a bit a few weeks ago as the drive belt snapped. I bought a new drive belt, fitted it, put the washing machine on a spin and the belt promptly snapped again. Is there anything I should be aware of when fitting a new drive belt? Do I need to move the motor? Thanks for any help you can give.

My Hotpoint WD71 won't drain, showing error E15 "Check Outlet Pipes". Normally this is a blockage in the pipe or the filter connected to the drum. I've taken this all apart and cleared a blockage, this time it was 4 curtain hooks and lots of other gunge. However I'm still getting the error when the machine tries to drain, I've disconnected and checked *all* the outlet pipes and none of them are blocked now. The machine will rinse and spin OK if I set it manually. Any ideas please?

The other day my washing machine stopped mid-programme and has refused to do anything since. The on / off switch also appears to have become jammed. I have checked the fuse and that's fine. Any ideas what can be done? Unfortunately this is very frustrating as there are clothes sitting in a pool of water in the drum and the door is still locked. Is there any way I can at least get the door open to remove the clothing?

I ordered a new door hinge and whilst removing the old hinge, a back plate seemed to drop into the washing machine meaning there is nowhere to screw the new hinge onto! To retrieve the back plate I assume I need to remove the front cover. Can you advise please. Many thanks.

I have an old Hotpoint 1200 Deluxe 9546. The problem is that the washing machine has just finished but I can't open the door. This happened once before but an old friend fixed it. It was something to do with a small lever that when you press the button this lever pushes on the belt at the back of the machine which opens the door. The lever looks ok, but for a while every time we have wanted to open the door we put our finger in and push the lever up manually and its been working fine. Today this method has stopped working and even when I push on the lever the door wont open. Please help, my washing is stuck inside.

I have a Hotpoint Ultima 1200 WM72P Washer that gave out an electrical pop when running and went off. I switched the machine off and on and the programmer display came back on normally. I then selected a program to test the machine but an error code E30 came up in the display the display then went off and will not come back on. As anyone had this problem, are there any fuses on the display; is this fault the motor drive card, the motor or both?

The brushes have been replaced (correctly) with new Hotpoint original parts but there is still no rotation. Can you tell me if there are some basic electrical tests which can determine whether the motor is likely to be faulty or the speed control module has failed ? For example, using a multimeter, what voltage should appear on the brushes ? Or what voltage should be on each of the connector pins ? (I am an electrical engineer....but not in domestic appliances).

It looks as if the drum bearings in my Hotpoint WMA32N have gone (noisy for 3/4 weeks) It appears that I can obtain spares, and I read threads regarding the fitment of the bearings on similar models to mine. Are there any hints available to help me strip and replace the bearings in the WMA32?

The bearings are getting a little noisey when spinning at full speed. I've replaced bearings before on a previous Hotpoint machine and seem to remember having difficulty in removing the old bearings etc. Are there any instructions available on replacing the bearings and also are any special tools required to carry out the job?

OK the problem is, small items of clothing, ie childrens socks seem to manage to get behind the drum, I reckon they go through the gap between the door seal and the drum itself, is there a fix for this or do I just bin it and get a better one ?

Andy I hope that you can help again. I fitted new brushes because the old ones were extemely worn and had damage to the plastic housing (caused by arcing?). The washing machine spun once fairly well - with the wash that was unfinished in there. When I tried to wash those clothes again the drum doesnt spin - not even slowly. It fills, the control dial turns, I can hear clicking (from the motor I think) but it will not empty the water and the drum wont turn. I read on the forums about armature damage - could this be the problem or does my motor need replacing. Thanks in advance, once again, for the excellent site and helpfull replies.

Some of the clothes come out as if they are bleached and all patchy, could this be a fault on the washing machine or the washing powder?

I not sure what the part is called exactly but one of the plastic paddles inside the drum keeps falling out. It will lock in to place securely but then after one or two washes will come loose midcycle. Even replacing the part has not solved the problem.

Hi Andy. I have just put new brushes in a Hotpoint motor, its the newer FHP motor type (I think that's what its called - its not the normal GEC type motor fitted anyway) I have got the clicking noise coming from them when on wash and a few sparks where the brush hits the armature and I am assuming that its because they are new and they will quieten when they have bedded in to the armature. I have checked twice to make sure they are seated correctly and I have checked the armature and it is absolutely perfect. Given that they are bedding in how long normally (approximately) would it take for the brushes to bed in and get quieter? It is "shrilling" quite loudly on spinn…

I have a hotpoint aquarius 900 WM61 brought from new in 1997. The washing machine has never been a problem up until a few months back when it would stop working and not spin the clothes. I rectified this problem by putting in new brushes as the old ones had completley worn down in the motor. Everything was fine up until the middle of last week when I noticed that the machine (I took off top cover whilst on) was sparking heavily from the motor (especially on long spin) and at one point even tripped the electicity switch at home and cut out our electric. I took out the brushes and they had melted the plastic at the base of the brushes where they had been sparking badl…

I have a washing machine and its giving me "Interferance Lines" through my television when motor turns to wash & Spin. I have removed the Brushes and there is loads of life left in them and the armature looks like new. Any Idea what could be causing the interferance from the washing machine? Also I seem to be getting a high speed "Whine" noise coming from the motor on high spin speed since I put the brushes back in - do you reckon I seated them OK or do they just have to "bed in"?

Andy, in an earlier post you advised that the drum belt rarely jumps off the drum pulley unless there is a contributory reason. I can confirm in my case this was due to the failure of the inner drum bearing. This means that the inner drum no longer runs concentrically with the outer drum. I now know the real source of the banging noise - not the detergent ball as originally thought. How likely can this be repaired successfully by replacement of the drum bearings alone, or is the damage probably more extensive and possibly a new drum assembly will be needed? In which direction do you withdraw the drum to remove the bearing? Through the back, front or top? The washing…

My washer started playing up a month or so ago, although only to the point that it wouldn't go into a spin at the end of a wash. As a result, I had to turn the dial through a wash cycle until I could get it to kick in. Today, it seems to have died completely. I cannot get the drum to move at all, the dial just clicks and moves around the cycle, but the drum does nothing. However, the input and output of water is not a problem, it still fills and drains. I also noticed that I can now open the door even when it's mid cycle. This isn't something I could do before today, as I'd tried it at the end of a wash when it had failed to spin. I took the top of the washing machine…

My Aquarius Ultima 1200 (model WD31) motor has stopped running properly. By this I mean that it will sometimes start but after several minutes then stops or (most commonly) just won't start at all. The symptoms occur on anything to do with the motor (ie. wash, spin or tumble dry all exhibit exactly the same problem). I've performed a continuity test across the what I believe are the feed pins to the motor (one blue/red and one purple) which is OK and so I have assumed the wiring inside the motor is OK. I've also performed a continuity test on all the pins of the motor connector to their equivilant pins on control module connector and again all these appear fine. Is th…

I've just found your web-site whilst looking for help with my hotpoint WD71 washer dryer. It seems to be eating clothes on the standard washing cycles, worse if it is reasonably full. It looks like friction burns on the spin cycle - perhaps rubbing on the hot air inlet/outlet above the door? It also can make loud banging noises when starting to rotate the drum for the spin cycle. And there is evidence of the main motor hitting the right hand side of the case. Both the shock absorbers in the base are connected firmly and there are two springs at the top providing fore and aft location. Is this the total mounting for the drum assembly? I expected a little more! Any idea…

I have the error E30 on our Hotpoint washing machine. The instruction book says e30 = motor error, but checking on the 'net I found it could be something as simple as the brushes, or as baffling as the triacs?? Any thoughts? Great site by the way.

Hello. I've just aquired a second hand Hotpoint WD22A Washer Dryer and everything works great except for I cannot get High Speed Spin to work. When I move the programmer to High Spin (1000rpm) the machine creeps up slowly on speed but then stays at a low speed slow spin. I had a spare motor so I changed that. No joy. And I have replaced the carbon brushes - still no high speed spin. I am now thinking it a fault on the PCB board next to the programmer but I dont have another PCB /Programmer to try. There are two large Transistors on the Heatsink (TY1 & TY2) - could one of them be faulty? The Instruction Book says that there is a feature on the WD22 that will stop t…
