Rattling / Scraping Noise

Recommended Posts

Just used my Zanussi washer/dryer and there was a light, metallic, rattling/clattering noise as the wash/rinse cycle ended and it started to spin. I stopped the machine and when it was empty I pushed the drum lightly and it moved freely although still rattled. Switched it on briefly to spin whilst empty and it works OK but the rattling persists. My first thought was 'bearings' but I know I forgot to empty the pockets of a pair of trousers because the load I removed when the problem became apparent was covered in shredded paper. Is there a possibility of the noise being caused by a coin/coins or by some other metallic object which may have been in the pocket(I'm missing a pair of eyebrow tweezers!)? The rubber seal seems very solid and tightly fitting. Nothing in the filter except few strands of fibre and shredded paper! The machine is far from new but just two of us so doesn't get heavy 'family' use and the dryer has seldom been used. As it's the weekend, I haven't called an engineer or anything. I'd be grateful for comments/advice. Many thanks.

A gentle metalic scraping noise when the drum turns round in a washing machine is often caused by an underwire from a bra. I have some help on that here - Washing machine making metalic scraping noise

If it's not a bra wire it's likely to be some other obstruction that's got into the machine. If you can-t find anything poking through one of the holes in the drum it'll need investigating by taking parts off. Sometimes an obstruction can be lodged in the top of the sump hose or the hose leading from the dispenser but if it's something trapped between the tub and drum it may need stripping down (if it can be stripped down as some newer machines have sealed tubs)

That's helpful and does hold out at least the possibility of a rescue so I've just contacted a local appliance engineer who is coming tomorrow. He knows which model I have and told me that if the bearings have gone it won't be worth my while to have it repaired. I felt more confident discussing the problem after reading the responses to my own query and some and of the other items on the forum, and have agreed a call-out charge which I will pay in the event of a repair not being carried out.

I'll post the result after the engineer has been because it may be of interest to other forum users.

Many thanks

Maria
