Hello All, hoping someone will know the answer to my query ..... have just had to buy a 2nd hand washing machine, which came through a reputed charity shop and has been tested for electrical safety. However once home, realised that there is no plate underneath [NOT the kick plate, I mean the whole of the underneath of the machine] the machine [so just a big hole and you can view the inner working parts straight through it, whole of underneath of machine is open]. I was wondering if anyone would know if this is dangerous please? I know the purpose of the plate is to reduce noise etc, not worried about that, just don't want to be in danger. Thank you to anyone that may know the answer on here

Hello there. Traditionally all washing machines had a completely open base. Some of them these days can have a plate covering it up. The main reason for this is to fit a float switch that can detect water leaks, and as you say to potentially cut down on noise. I think it's unlikely that someone would have removed a base plate and potentially a float switch mechanism too.  I can't be 100% sure of course but the chances are it never had one to start with.
