Washing Machine Stops Tumble Drying After 4 Turns

Recommended Posts

I'm having some trouble with a Hoover Six 1200 WDM120 washing machine. On the drying cycle the machine does 4 lots of turns - alternating directions between each set, and then just stops turning. The washing cycles work OK and the drum appears to be spinning fine.

After stopping, it sounds as though there is still water being pumped through the machine and heated, and there appears to be no water stuck in the machine. Hitting the on/off switch twice starts it up again - but it does 4 more turns and stops again! With some patience I've actually got one set of washing dry now!

Initially, the drum had only been rotating one way, and having taken the back off, I found a loose connection to the motor, which I have reattached. It's only 13 months old - 1 month outside the warranty period - I'm OK fixing most stuff but it's beginning to look like broken electronics rather than anything I can do myself.

The strange thing about this one is why it should stop turning specifically after 4 turns on the tumble drying side - yet apparently it turns perfectly OK on the wash. The same motor is used for wash, rinse, spin and tumble dry. The same programme timer and the same speed control module is used also. I would expect a motor to either be dodgy on wash and on dry, or to be OK on them both.

If not, then I'd have to suspect the timer is at fault although I can't remember coming across this fault before. Is the motor definitely OK and turning both ways happily on wash?

If the timer IS actually at fault, it would cost you approx £89 for Hoover to do it under the free 5-year parts guarantee and this would be no more expensive really than fitting such a part yourself (because it's so expensive) but without the risk of misdiagnosis. (Related: I have a 5 year parts guarantee - should I use it? | My washing machine is now out of guarantee, but I don't think I should have to pay for a repair)

Cheers for the reply - I'll try the guarantee. I noticed last night after more tinkering though that the spin-dry bit has the same trouble, but the washing section seems definitely to be OK - I've got a spare room full of soaked but clean clothes :-)

If it's not just the drying side playing up then I'd check all the connections on the motor and motor plug. Also, if the motor is making a crackling, gratering noise when it turns, or you can see flashes from the motor when it turns, then it coud be the carbon brushes worn out.
