Washing Machine Noisy When Draining

My washer makes an awful grinding noise which seems to occur when it is draining the water. I thought, when I first heard this noise that it was coming from the pump. So I presumed that it may have been caused by something that had got inside the pump. Yet I've had the pump off and the filter compartment and as yet have find no foreign object.

Plastic objects can float away when investigating a pump for obstructions. I've had great difficulty trying to retrieve such objects because they can float back up the sump hose and even go back into the tub. Make sure you totally drain the washing machine by laying the drain hose onto the floor, or out of the back door after you've drained as much water out into a bowl. Tip the washing machine back and forward with the drain hose on the floor and you may get several more cups full of water out, which may help stop it floating away. Make sure you have plenty of towels down.

Other than that, the pump itself could be faulty and need replacing. Water pumps can become very noisy, sometimes intermittently and sometimes only after running a while.
