Indesit Wd12 Very Noisy Drum

Recommended Posts

I have an Indesit WD12 washer/dryer. Everything works fine, but it has recently developed a very noisy spin cycle. I understand this is most likely to be the drum bearings. I have two questions.

The first is how is it effecting a repair on this machine. I have read another post regarding a WG10 and that sounded like it could be problematic. Do service manuals exist?

The second is what would have caused this? The only thing I can think of is that recently when it was moved we lost one of the front feet. We got a new one sent through but the sent a foot that was too large. It meant that the machine is now tilted slightly backwards. It was better than it being unstable but would this put more pressure on the bearing and cause it to come to an early demise?

Cheers for reading and thanks for any help offered.

To be sure it's the drum bearings, take off the drive belt at the back. Then open the door and spin the drum fast. If the drum bearings have gone it should rumble and be noisy. Another sign is excessive up and down play in the drum. Sometimes there are brown marks down the back of the drum backplate, underneath the drum pulley (where the belt goes).

The overwhelming cause of drum bearing failure is water getting into them from a failed drum bearing seal. Fixing them varies from machine to machine, but usually it's an expensive repair if you get someone out to it. It can be done DIY if you are confident and a competent DIYer.

The washing machine being uneven shouldn't cause any problems other than rocking about.

Unfortunately, these days many washing machines are designed not to have easily repairable drum bearings to make production cheaper. Many require the replacement of the back half of the tub or even a complete tub. This makes drum bearing failure terminal because of the costs involved. If you are replacing drum bearings yourself, and not having a labour charge, it may make the repair more viable as long as you are confident you can carry out the repair OK.
