I'm not a plumber or electrician, but will always have a go at buying a part and replacing something that can be repaired. Advice needed here...

I have a vintage Hotpoint First Edition 1000 that has served me well - over 20 years old. Great machine.

Recently, a random knocking sound has been happening - occasionally before the spin cycle but mainly during the spin cycle - when it gets very loud.

I removed the top and filmed it - the movement of the drum seems ok to me. Any idea what might be the problem from the experts here?

I am in Leytonstone East London if anyone wants to quote me for a repair (if this is a particularly awkward job I can't do myself)

Hi. The first thing I would do is disconnect from the electrics. Then bounce the drum about by hand to replicate the movement of the drum. If the sound is still present use your ears to work out where from. Check the chassis for cracks and check suspension.

If the sound isn't present check the aluminium drum pulley for cracks.

Either something in under the drum or I`d say the drum spider is cracked BUT that noise is usually much louder. It is also equally possible that there is a crack under the supension leg so the chassis base plate, under if memory serves me right, one (or both) of the suspension rubber mounts. This model series were famed for it.

P.S. if it is the chassis split under the suspension leg/s there was a repair bracket available at the time but now? Also because of its age the suspension itself is probably getting worn out so be warned. Think the whole suspension kit (both sides) last time I looked (a while back now as in several years) was about 79 quid but probably obsolete at a guess?
