washer washes OK but does no longer spin

Hi

I have been reading your article  Washing machine not spinning at end of cycle in detail, but I don't find the answer to my issue.

Hence below detailed description of issue:

I am having issue that my Asko Cylinda 11002 from 1991 with Siemens motor has stopped spinning, but washes and drains water OK. I.e. it proceeds to end of program. This issue has developed over last year or so, but now it does not spin at all. Earlier on it was spinning at 90 deg. program only.

So far I have checked:

1. 3 rubber pipes to level switch N1 and N2 – ok
2. Y connection – ok
3. carbon brushes of motor – ok
4. driving belt OK (checked when motor was removed to check brushes)
5. No abnormal from motor or machine during washing.
6. pressure chamber clean – no blockage
7. noise capacitor (100 nanoF 50 OHM) burnt and replaced with 100 nanoF 2.2 M ohm (since I could not find the original one so far)

Any further ideas would be appreciated.

Hello. The article contains all possible causes of the fault. It sounds like you've eliminated several things which leaves faults on the motor or the pcb as suspects. I would not recommend speculatively replacing any of them though. It's just too risky with the cost of the parts with no guarantee of a fix if you haven't been able to confidently diagnose the fault.

One question: when you say PCB I guess you mean timer module?

Hello Peter. Most washing machines are controlled by PCB power modules now. If it's one with an old style timer they usually work in conjunction with a separate pcb.

I found solution to spinning problem. In my case brushes were OK, but motor would not take speed. So motor was the issue not the PCB/timer.

Seems to be well known issue that when induction motors like this are getting worn they may not spin at higher speeds.

It needed a helping hand when checking it in external test setup, see e.g. http://www.how-to-repair.com/help/how-to-test-a-washing-machine-motor/.

So I found a refurbished motor, which then solved the issue.

Thanks for the update Peter. I wouldn't recommend anyone trying the test rig though unless they really understand what's going on or your motor is exactly the same as the one featured. Good video.
