Feedback On John Lewis Purchase

Our Zanussi Jetsystem 1200 washing machine packed up after many years service and my wife decided to buy the John Lewis JLWM1201. Just thought I'd let you know my wife is very pleased with the John Lewis machine which is quieter than the old one.

Main plus points for her were:-

1. a pause button - very useful when eating lunch

2. larger drum size welcomed with 4 kids

3. washing seems drier after spin

4. less vibration

Machine is still going well and again thanks for your advice

The 1201 has now been replaced by the JLWM1203 washing machine which has a larger drum capacity and extra features plus a 3 year guarantee.

I see the John Lewis site is now showing the model as a 1202.

Where did you find the clearance deal on the 1201 ??

I don't see a clearance section on the John Lewis site.

Great you like th John Lewis product. I am in need of a washer and a tumble dryer. Price not my number one concern. Can you advise? I am concerned with noise, lenth of wash time and energy and water efficncy balance. Any advice please?

Hi Mary, and welcome. Sorry for the delay in replying. I started replying, but then decided that part of my intended reply needed expanding and it eventually turned into an entire new article, which I've put up on the main Washerhelp site.

Looking at the Washerhelp buying advice, and the buying section of these forums, you can probably see that I recommend Miele and John Lewis. Each for different reasons and potentially for different types of customer, depending on their financial situation and attitude to buying washing machines. If price is not your main concern I would recommend Miele.

Here's the bit that took me so long. Your concerns about, "noise, length of wash time and energy and water efficiency" led me to think about the ECO energy labels because they cover most of these concerns. The problem is that they do not lead you to a good washing machine purchase because they give a very blinkered view. These days, even some of the worst washing machines you can buy can have A ratings for wash efficiency, energy usage and spin drying efficiency. They have become badges that that help sell washing machines and should not be used exclusively, or even too seriously, to make a buying decision.

I don't wish to take away the obvious importance, and growing public concern about such issues, but if you can find time, read my new section, which gives my comprehensive (as ever) thoughts. For anyone with little time or patience, a summary would be as follows -

• Just try and buy the best quality washing machine you can afford.
• Remember that spending a lot on a washing machine does not necessarily get you a better quality washing machine. There are a lot of non-quality washing machines at around the same price as a basic Miele washing machine. You are just paying for features - not build quality ( Further reading: If I buy a more expensive washing machine, do I get a better washing machine? )
• The better quality washing machines tend to be much quieter, give better wash results and are more efficient anyway
