Hi

A newby here and I have narrowed down my next purchase to be a Miele washing machine, due to the build quality and the quietness.

However, I am intriged to know, as I am still will to be pursuaded, that as a requirement I would like to be able to wash a king size duvet/dog bed/large items rather than take them to the local launderette (@ £13 a pop!).

Can any of the Miele washing machines wash these? If so, which ones, if not, which other makes/models can?

Looking forward to any advice.

My Miele W3740 has a 6kg drum. Prior to that we had a Dyson CR01 which had a 7kg drum. The 7kg drum comfortably washed our king sized duvet cover. However, the duvet is a tight fit in the 6kg drum. It washed, but I wasn't entirely happy as it occasionally caught on the door seal and squeaked.

I have to conclude that 6kg is not ideal for washing a king sized duvet cover but 7kg or 8kg probably is although some drum capacities are not as large as others when both claim to be the same sized drums. For more information, see these articles -

Difference in drum capacities - Drum capacities, which is best?

Thanks for the advice.

Just to follow up though, could you advise if the Siemens is anywhere near the build quality and quietness of any Miele's. The location of the machine means that we would like a washer that is as quiet as possible.

I get a feeling we are going to have to compronise somewhere here, just not sure on model or size yet!!

Look forward to any further advice.

No, the Siemens washing machines are not anywhere near the same build quality as Miele but I rate them as one of the best of the rest. In my opinion if you rated Miele as the best (which I do) at 10, then most of the rest are at 5. I'd rate some of the others at only 2 or 3. However I would put Siemens at 6 and I don't know of any UK washing machines that I would put at 7, 8, or 9 so there's a big gap there. Basically, Miele are built so much better than the rest that you could even ask why? Some might argue there's no need to be that much better. I for one am glad they are and I really admire their commitment - not just to quality - but to exceptional quality. However, when buying a miele you may well have to compromise on some features such as spin speeds and drum sizes. I reckon if Miele made a 7Kg drum washing machine it'd probably cost about £850 - £900.

I would stick to buying a Miele machine and buy Spundown duvets as they are designed to squash up enough to fit in a standard machine. Theyare made by The Fine Bedding Company and have won a Queens award. They are about £70 for a kingsize but worth it. I own a 5 star B&B and guests often comment on the duvets and ask where they can buy them. As a bonus, they can be washed at 60 degrees which kills dustmites. I have a Honeycomb W412 which does approx 20 washes a week and the machine is 3 years old with no problems - despite the fact that I rarely clean the filter (about 3 times in 3 years!)

Also - I have often washed large/overweight items in my machine which would probably knacker other machines but the Miele can take a bashing.

Also my 5 year old Miele dryer is still going strong.
