Reliable Simple Machines

Does anybody know if it is still possible to buy a washing machine and tumble dryer that are mostly mechanical and largely user or cheaply serviceable? I have just bought a washer dryer that has needed two parts replaced (non-user serviceable bits that got filled with fluff) in 5 months, and that is producing smelly clothes from the dry cycle. I have tried really hard to explain to the retailer and the maker that I don't think it's fit for purpose and that I should be offered a replacement of a different, more reliable machine. However, they are not convinced. I'm a still working on getting the replacement, so would really like to know if there is a less problematic alternative out there. I don't really have room for separates, but could just about manage it at a push. The budget is about £550, and I would be happy to accept something very non-fancy if it would just last for a good long time.
