Our brand new Hotpoint WMEF742 washing machine had a fault on program 10 (FastWash 60min). The engineer admitted that this was a known fault that required the controller to be reprogrammed. This was a simple enough job as it only required the engineer to plug his laptop into the comms port at the back of the machine. Evidently some machines have this faulty program and some don't. The fault in question prevents the wash completing with a spin and so leaves the clothes soaking wet. The fault occurs at the very start of the first rinse phase. With around 26 minutes left on the clock, the clock suddenly drops 11 minutes down to 15 minutes. Due to this error the clock reaches 1 minute before the wash completes. Although the program tries to correct for this by jumping up to 7 minutes it only runs down one further minute and then jumps to the end and unlocks the machine before it spins. The amended program doesn't actually fix the 11 minutes that are knocked off at the start of the first rinse phase and so the program still runs down to 1 minute before it should. However, when it jumps back up to 7 minutes it does use this full 7 minutes to finish the wash with a spin. So program 10 does now work, albeit in a bodged sort of way that renders the timer meaningless.

Yes I've heard about this (or a similar) issue, which was found by Which? during testing for a review if I remember right.Technically people should have a claim against the retailer because the washing machine has been sold with an inherent fault. If this fault is discovered quite early on they may be entitled to a refund or replacement. If it is out of guarantee or even a moth or two into ownership they may only be entitled to a free repair, which presumably Hotpoint are giving anyway.

My Aunt has just discovered what looks like a fault in this machine. After using the wash and spin programme, the one with the curling type symbol, the door just won't open. The shop wher she purchased it advised her that this could be due to water blockage. After unblocking the pipes attached to the sink and the bottom part of the machine, she selected programme number 14. The door still is stuck. We are at odds as to why this could be. The shop advised that if it is the customers fault, they are (understandably) liable. If there's they will be liable. Any ideas advice on this please?
