In a nutshell, the brushes of our Aquarius 1200 were worn out after 8 years service, I put new ones in (£15 locally, and a seemingly east task) but on its first run the insulation on one of the brush crimps burnt through (must have been touching the motor body) I refitted the crimp the other way around, but it looks as though the motor is now damaged as its blowing fuses when the motor is plugged in So the warning is, be VERY careful when fitting new brushes, be sure the wires/crimps are properly fitted and NOT touching the motor body BEFORE you switch on.

Before I get the tools out maybe you can give me some pointers. Washing machine started stopping mid cycle and while trying to get it finished it tripped the electrics RCD. Now it will fill and drain, timer clicks and turns, but the drum will not turn. If I put on spin it will drain until empty but does not turn the drum. It did spin initially, after the RCD tripped but is not playing now. There is resistance in the drum when turned by hand. I would appreciate some advice Cheers.

The RCD has tripped a couple of times. By a process of elimination (or finger pointing) the washing machine is the culprit. The kitchen accessories circuit is now relegated to a separate RCBO to save the annoyance when trying things out and it trips! As soon as the washing machine would want to start running the motor the RCD trips. By disconnecting the power plug to the motor all is fine, i.e. it starts up and after a few seconds reports E30 (i.e. there's a motor fault!). I've checked the brushes and these look fine (machine about 4.5 yrs old). Contacts on the armature all look OK - none raised, and spins freely. A couple of years ago we bought a Hotpopint WMA10 with no extended cover. For the last few months it has shaken fairly noisely whenever on a high spin and we've ignored it hoping it would go away. However, this weekend it stopped spinning at all. After removing the top I found the belt had fallen off the top larger wheel attached to the drum. On further investigation I found the belt was worn on the second V in from (ie the belt is shaped like VVVVV and the second was almost entirely worn away. I have made the mistake of trying to wash a bathmat in the machine. The mat partly disintegrated, losing a lot of fibres in the process, which must be blocking the works because the machine now cannot spin the water out. There doesn't seem to be a filter anywhere that I can clear out. I'd like to try to unblock the washing machine myself, rather than having to call out an engineer. Is this a possibility for a beginner? I'd be very grateful for your advice.

I have a Hotpoint aquarius 1100 (wm63) which is fairly heavily used (2-3 washes per day). A few days ago it seemed to be stuck at the beginnning of the rinse cycle and so I turned the dial on a notch. It then gave a loud "bang" and shifted itself a couple of inches to its right (it couldn't go any further as there was a dishwasher blocking its path!) It then carried on and finished the cycle. I thought (probably foolishly) that something had got caught in the drum and then had pinged free, so used it again. About a year ago, the door on my washing machine wouldn't open after the cycle had finished. This was repaired. Then in broke again and repaired again. Now it's happened again. It started of where it would sometimes open and sometimes not. If it didn't, I'd manually move the programme dial all the way round and this normally would do the trick. Now it's permanently locked! I pull the catch, but nothing happens. Had a repairman round who said it was the pressure switch not releasing and gave me a ridiculous quote to fix it. I have a 4 year old hotpoint wm65 which has died. It was working fine until I moved it to clean underneath - when I put it on the next wash there was no action. My wife tells me that she has had to open and close the door to get it to operate recently. As the "door locked" light will not come on can I assume that the little mechanism for locking the door has malfunctioned and needs replacing?

My Hotpoint WD71 won't drain, showing error E15 "Check Outlet Pipes". Normally this is a blockage in the pipe or the filter connected to the drum. I've taken this all apart and cleared a blockage, this time it was 4 curtain hooks and lots of other gunge. However I'm still getting the error when the machine tries to drain, I've disconnected and checked *all* the outlet pipes and none of them are blocked now. The machine will rinse and spin OK if I set it manually. Any ideas please?

I ordered a new door hinge and whilst removing the old hinge, a back plate seemed to drop into the washing machine meaning there is nowhere to screw the new hinge onto! To retrieve the back plate I assume I need to remove the front cover. Can you advise please. Many thanks.

I have an old Hotpoint 1200 Deluxe 9546. The problem is that the washing machine has just finished but I can't open the door. This happened once before but an old friend fixed it. It was something to do with a small lever that when you press the button this lever pushes on the belt at the back of the machine which opens the door. The lever looks ok, but for a while every time we have wanted to open the door we put our finger in and push the lever up manually and its been working fine. Today this method has stopped working and even when I push on the lever the door wont open. Please help, my washing is stuck inside.

I have a Hotpoint Ultima 1200 WM72P Washer that gave out an electrical pop when running and went off. I switched the machine off and on and the programmer display came back on normally. I then selected a program to test the machine but an error code E30 came up in the display the display then went off and will not come back on. As anyone had this problem, are there any fuses on the display; is this fault the motor drive card, the motor or both?

The brushes have been replaced (correctly) with new Hotpoint original parts but there is still no rotation. Can you tell me if there are some basic electrical tests which can determine whether the motor is likely to be faulty or the speed control module has failed ? For example, using a multimeter, what voltage should appear on the brushes ? Or what voltage should be on each of the connector pins ? (I am an electrical engineer....but not in domestic appliances).

It looks as if the drum bearings in my Hotpoint WMA32N have gone (noisy for 3/4 weeks) It appears that I can obtain spares, and I read threads regarding the fitment of the bearings on similar models to mine. Are there any hints available to help me strip and replace the bearings in the WMA32?

The bearings are getting a little noisey when spinning at full speed. I've replaced bearings before on a previous Hotpoint machine and seem to remember having difficulty in removing the old bearings etc. Are there any instructions available on replacing the bearings and also are any special tools required to carry out the job?

Andy I hope that you can help again. I fitted new brushes because the old ones were extemely worn and had damage to the plastic housing (caused by arcing?). The washing machine spun once fairly well - with the wash that was unfinished in there. When I tried to wash those clothes again the drum doesnt spin - not even slowly. It fills, the control dial turns, I can hear clicking (from the motor I think) but it will not empty the water and the drum wont turn. I read on the forums about armature damage - could this be the problem or does my motor need replacing. Thanks in advance, once again, for the excellent site and helpfull replies.

I not sure what the part is called exactly but one of the plastic paddles inside the drum keeps falling out. It will lock in to place securely but then after one or two washes will come loose midcycle. Even replacing the part has not solved the problem.

Hi Andy. I have just put new brushes in a Hotpoint motor, its the newer FHP motor type (I think that's what its called - its not the normal GEC type motor fitted anyway) I have got the clicking noise coming from them when on wash and a few sparks where the brush hits the armature and I am assuming that its because they are new and they will quieten when they have bedded in to the armature. I have checked twice to make sure they are seated correctly and I have checked the armature and it is absolutely perfect. Given that they are bedding in how long normally (approximately) would it take for the brushes to bed in and get quieter? It is "shrilling" quite loudly on spinn…

I have a hotpoint aquarius 900 WM61 brought from new in 1997. The washing machine has never been a problem up until a few months back when it would stop working and not spin the clothes. I rectified this problem by putting in new brushes as the old ones had completley worn down in the motor. Andy, in an earlier post you advised that the drum belt rarely jumps off the drum pulley unless there is a contributory reason. I can confirm in my case this was due to the failure of the inner drum bearing. This means that the inner drum no longer runs concentrically with the outer drum. I now know the real source of the banging noise - not the detergent ball as originally thought. How likely can this be repaired successfully by replacement of the drum bearings alone, or is the damage probably more extensive and possibly a new drum assembly will be needed? My washer started playing up a month or so ago, although only to the point that it wouldn't go into a spin at the end of a wash. As a result, I had to turn the dial through a wash cycle until I could get it to kick in. Today, it seems to have died completely. I cannot get the drum to move at all, the dial just clicks and moves around the cycle, but the drum does nothing. However, the input and output of water is not a problem, it still fills and drains. My Aquarius Ultima 1200 (model WD31) motor has stopped running properly. By this I mean that it will sometimes start but after several minutes then stops or (most commonly) just won't start at all. The symptoms occur on anything to do with the motor (ie. wash, spin or tumble dry all exhibit exactly the same problem). I've just found your web-site whilst looking for help with my hotpoint WD71 washer dryer. It seems to be eating clothes on the standard washing cycles, worse if it is reasonably full. It looks like friction burns on the spin cycle - perhaps rubbing on the hot air inlet/outlet above the door? It also can make loud banging noises when starting to rotate the drum for the spin cycle. And there is evidence of the main motor hitting the right hand side of the case. Both the shock absorbers in the base are connected firmly and there are two springs at the top providing fore and aft location. Is this the total mounting for the drum assembly?
