Hello

New to forum so hello All.

I'm looking to buy a new Bosch washing machine. I have norrowed down to the series 6 washing machine. From what I've read the difference between these machines is one has I DOS system which uses just the right amount of detergent for each wash and the other doesn't have it. I reality how well does this system work or is just a nucence and I am better off with the one that doesn't have this option?

	Thanks

Hi. First time poster (though frequent previous reader/enjoyer) and I hope I am in the right forum for what follows. It's probably one for you @Whitegoodshelp (Andy) with your extensive background but happy to hear from anyone with an evidence-based opinion.

	tl/dr; which brand(s) is/are currently a worthwhile purchase in the £400-£600 range?

So... our 2008 Miele (Distinction 600 - was a Comet-own variant but similar to W555) is getting to the point I don't want to keep stripping it down and repairing it and spending money on it. There's too many things queued up waiting to expire any moment so I will be getting a new machine imminently.

I am someone who likes to investigate things, cares about having something "well built" and I keep in mind future repairability of which I do all my own. I was delighted with the Miele when we got it - at the time the cheapest Miele available. In comparison with everything else at the time it was literally a bit of a 'tank' (of the Panzer variety) and has lasted a family of four very well and been relatively easy to maintain (occasional strips down for blocked breather pipes, water control repairs, new motor brushes etc).

Fast forward to 2025. It is very clear to me - having looked at current Mieles in a local showroom - they are simply trading on past glories and reputation. I don't think they build any domestic machines in Germany now - and while I suppose manufacturer location isn't my biggest concern - Miele are still charging their prices for stuff that looks tinny and frankly (and without taking one apart) they look no better than mid-price machines from the likes of Bosch and AEG/John Lewis. I imagine anyone who buys a new Miele today and spends a grand on it won't be repeating that 'choice' and I don't intend to stick with the brand because of the quality drop myself.

So... and while I have the luxury/luck that (as far as a washing machine goes) I have an 'open wallet' I am a little unsure of which direction to jump. Everything now seems to be made in Turkey, Poland or Italy with some machines coming over from China - there seems to be little between them on the face of it and none look particularly great anymore. Frankly I want something that is going to do a decent job of washing clothes, not - hopefully, I know there's never a 'guarantee' - give up after 3 years, and I have some chance of sourcing parts to repair the basics when needed.

I did give serious thought to Ebac machines but - and while I like the idea of supporting a UK-based business - I have read way too many tales of woe of machines replaced multiple times and they simply won't spin anything due to oversensitivity on balancing. No use to me.

So I am weighing up a Bosch Series 4 vs a John Lewis (which I am fully aware is a rebadged AEG) vs going cheaper and getting a Beko. I am unfamiliar with Bosch, haven't been entirely thrilled with the quality of our 2016 AEG Tumble Dryer (though that seemed on a par with everything else at the time) and while my mum has a long-serving Beko, I am suspicious they have pushed further down the 'reduce costs' route. You've written several articles on the state of the market yourself Andy and everything seems to be about cheap, short-lasting and throwaway products now and it feels like we're all now choosing the 'least bad' option.

Thoughts / input please? I am happy with that simply being 'buy a Bosch' but I'd like some justification as to why.

Or failing that has anyone got a New Old Stock Miele kicking about in their garage/shop/warehouse?

not had machine long but here I my first impressions and observations of this model of Washing Machine the Samsung 2020 Series 5+ 9KG Auto Dose Washing Machine Model Number 90T534WAN (in White) or 90T534DAN (in Dark Grey)

FEATURES:
*Auto Load sensing (weigh's clothes in wash drum before each wash)
*Auto-dose technology (measures out doses automatically of liquid detergent and fabric softener)
*AI technology - remembers your most frequent wash cycles that you use
*Quiet Invertor brushless motor (10 year warranty on motor)
* 5 Year parts and labour Warranty (after Registration)
*Wi-Fi enabled (works also with Alexa)

LOADING:
*The port hole size is smaller than than our old 8KG washer . This 9KG diameter being 12" opening and the hotpoint opening being larger by only 1" at 13" wide ... but really makes a difference especially when loading larger items such as bed sheets

DRUM CAPACITY:
* our old washing machine , a Hotpoint 8Kg Drum - this Samsung has a capacity of 9KG but the physical size of the drum is actually smaller inside.

DOOR:
* The porthole door does not open all the way back like the door on our hotpoint washing machine.

* why put a Black Door on a White Washing Machine? .. aesthetically it does not look right - also why make the door a lot larger than it needs to be seeing as the porthole width is not that large?

* The machine uses very little water to wash - sometimes so visibly you would wonder how it even washes the clothes with such little water. but it still does seem to clean the garments well still.

MELODY & BEEPS:
* Silly that you cannot silence all the audio signals and jingles of the washing machine - you can turn off that musical jingle at the end (which is far too long in duration Samsung!) but even though you can silence that jingle you cannot silence the other bleeps of the washing machine. - This I think is such short sightedness on Samsung's part in manufacturing / designing the machine - you have a perfectly good menu window with all different options - they could have put in the menu "Sounds" "Low/Med/High/Off/All Off" easily and had a choice of "Musical Jingle or Bleep Signal at end of wash cycle"

INFO DISPLAY WINDOW:
* The option buttons underneath the display panel on this model do not seem to light up on this particular model but they do on other similar models from Samsung.

* The large 7 Segment 'Digits' in the display panel show spin speed in large digits whereas it would have been more sensible to have the 'Time to End' Time in large digits on the display panel so that you could quickly glance across the room to see how long the wash will take to end , rather than putting the rinse and spin speed in large digits and the 'Time to End' info in smaller display font .

Looks like this in the way Samsung have designed the window info display:

I think this way would have been better personally:

* It is annoying that the 'remote control' by wifi that you have to keep re-enabling every wash and that when you turn the machine on again you have to enable it again if you want top 'start' the wash on the machine by the app.

SPIN CYCLE:
* The drum spins ant-clockwise , on our Hotpoint it spins Clockwise (I know I am being picky now) - I don't know if in the terms of centrifugal force physics whether one spin has an advantage and squeezes more water out on one or the other but it looks strange spinning anti-clockwise.

* The drain pump is noisy - I would have thought in the 2020's washing machine manufacturers would have come up with ways of making the pump sound near on silent , they still, like the older washing machines, have that 'graunchy' sound to them especially when they are still pumping when the water has long been emptied from the drum - here you have a lovely quiet induction motor and then over-shadowed by the pump sound when emptying or spinning

AESTHEITICS / LOOKS:
* The front panel would look much more sleeker and modern without the silver turn dial I think personally, they could have just put the soft touch capacitive buttons in that place for going backwards and forwards in the menu and selecting the wash cycle instead of this dial which has a chance to possibly break of one of these days if someone brushes past the machine or is heavy handed or the kids start playing with it .

* after filling the drum with water on a wash cycle you can hear a sound of a pump (not the drain pump but some other pump) , I presume this is aerating the water and the wash detergent and air because the water starts to froth up with suds , this is even with the 'bubble soak' turned off in the menu , and on all the washes I have tried so far .

* At the end of the Cycle the machine spins , and then turns immediately off (shuts down) thats it .. no tumbling or anything until the clothes are taken out of the drum?
I would have liked to see maybe a 20-30 minute delay after the clothes have spun with the word 'END' before machine shuts down and in that 20-30 minutes just tumble every now and again (and play a few bleeps every now and again) until user comes along and takes out the washing from the drum (I do realise that when you press the wifi remote button on the front panel when you are away from home the machine will tumble the contents of the drum until you come home but I would like to see this feature whether the remote wifi is on or off personally)

AUTO DOSING FEATURE IS COOL:
* The auto-dosing is a great feature but I have it set to 'Med' on both the detergent and softener and the way it goes down in the drawer (Quickly) I cannot see it lasting that long before it needs re-filling again.

MORE ON SPINNING:
* this washing machine seems to go into a spin good - better than our old hotpoint washing machine which was very fussy- if that was un-balanced in any way there was no way that it was going to even attempt to do a spin at all so clothes sometimes would come out sopping wet (I wish manufacturers with their fancy LED info panels will inform the end user that the machine went into a non spin mode on the display , something like 'could not spin' or an error code at the end of a wash on the display so the end user was not at a guessing game stage wondering did the washing spin or not) - so yeah it looks like this Samsung will go into some kind of spin even if that means the inner drum wobbling like mad as it starts to spin (or even a low spin, well thats something at least)

* There is pretty poorly design of a switch protruding above the door lock - I can see that being broke off in a hurry easily when cleaning all around the door seal and it getting caught up in a cloth - what is it there for and why did they leave that sticking out when designing it?

DONT LIKE:
* why (or why does it feel like its enforced on the user) that the first wash when you put on the machine is that Eco 40-60 the first programme to pop up rather than the cycle you use the most as the first cycle to show when you first turn on the machine? - they wont even let you remove that cycle in the settings when you go into the menu to choose what cycles you want to show - grrrr...!

* When you want to adjust Temperature or Spin speed I find it annoying already to adjust - say i want 1200rpm - why do I have to go 1400rpm then down to no spin then count up instead of (as on most washing machines you go down , so 1400rpm, then 1200rpm, then 1000rpm and so on - that feels more logical to me .

LOAD SENSING:
* The Machine does load sensing at the beginning of the wash, and it does this load sensing with the garments dry in the drum - it takes about 20 to 30 seconds with the drum tumbling and speeding up every now and again , here's a question why don't manufactures with the informative LED (or dot matrix) display widow tell you (even if briefly) how much Kg of washing the drum has sensed?? - at least it would give the end user an idea if they are overloading their machines or putting in too many garments for the particular cycle they have selected (Say if you are doing a quick wash and the max is 4kg say for the quick wash and a message popped up that you have put in 5 or 6kg in the drum - well then you could then stop the cycle and take some items out of the drum) I wonder why the facility is there to read out the weight of the load in the drum but they choose not to display it on the fascia
panel?

BUBBLE SOAK:
Only available on certain cycles such as Towels and Bedding cycles - it does add 30minutes onto your washing times

STEAM FEATURE:
* the machine has a steam refresh feature but unlike some other washing machine with this feature you cannot use the steam at the very end of the wash to iron out any of the creases in shirts etc or to make ironing easier - its more like in the blurb from samsung more like a feature to kill germs rather than use it to get rid of creases in garments and only with certain cycles it can be used.

OTHER THINGS OBSERVED:
I have had the scenario the other day that a lone Sock had got stuck between the glass bowl door and the gasket throughout nearly the whole wash ... it did eventually fall back into the drum when it done a fast spin during the rinses cycle - maybe socks and other small items need to be placed in wash nets or something for this reason?

Sometimes the time duration will come up on the display window and you will think 'wow that is going to take a long time washing' but you may find after the drum has gone through its load sensing bit at the start that the time may reduce , so don't be too alarmed at the beginning of selecting a cycle that it is going to take ages to wash when you first select the cycle.

This Series 5 model (2020 WW90T534DAW) does not have an 'Add Wash' door feature on the machine ... but I have observed that if the following have not been met:

Wash not been long started
Water level is under grey door gasket
Water is not hot

Then when you press the pause button the drum will stop revolving and after a few seconds you will hear a click and the door can be opened for you to add that forgotten odd sock etc... - then long press the start pause button and the washing will recommence where it left off.

When washing , if you press the pause button (II) you can select another cycle say if you are halfway through a wash and its taking a long time and you want to advance to rinse & spin or decide you want to choose another cycle instead , you can do that but the caveat is that it will cancel your present cycle and will drain/empty the drum of water and start the new selected cycle all over again from the beginning.

This model (WW90T534DAW/WW90T534DAN) has 3 sensor technology the first is
(1) 'weight' sensing to check the weight of the items to be washed, presumable to see how much water to add to the drum and how much liquid detergent to the wash - then there is sensor number (2) a 'water level pressure switch' to detect and change the amount of water in the drum (it seems to do this through the wash too so if it starts washing and halfway through the wash feels the water has been soaked up by the garments it will add some more cold water to the drum) - then (3) the Auto-dosing sensor. - However if you want true sensor technology you have to go for the much dearer Samsung washing Machine the 9 series WW90T986DSH/S1 priced at roughly £1,149.99 in the UK which adds a 4th sensor called a Turbidity Sensor. This sensor is situated in the sump of the washing machine and detects the 'drtyness' or cloudiness of the clothes that are to be washed and sends back info to the washing machines electronics that should change things like add more time to the wash or add more rinses if needed automatically and adjust/add more autodose washing liquid detergent to the wash , and more than likely if the items are not that heavily soiled then the Turbidity Sensor should detect and shorten the was time - so if your budget can afford this price this would be the best machine out of the range also you will get more features and more cycles with the WW90T986DSH/S1 as well as a faster selectable spin speed of 1600rpm as opposed to the maximum 1400rpm spin speed of the WW90T534DAW.

If you read the leaflets for the WW90T534DAW / WW90T534/DAN washing machines one of the selling points it lists is an Auto Clean Soap Drawer with powerful jets to keep the soap drawer clean of detergent residue ... but (I could be wrong) but I don't think the autodose draw type machines have this feature - yes I could see the normal type soap dispenser models maybe having this feature but i cannot see anything different (apart from the nozzles at the back of the soap dispenser housing for the autodose feature) to denote that this autodose model has a stay-clean soap dispenser compartment myself.

SPOT THE SPELLING MISTAKE:
Its no biggie and has no effect on the working of the washing machine but it is amusing all the same

SHORTCUTS TO SPIN & RINSE & SPIN CYCLES:
here is a neat feature that saves you time scrolling through all the cycles with the dial button you can (whatever cycle you have the machine set to - or even if you haven't got a wash cycle set at all) you can quickly get to the rinse cycle by
long pressing the 'rinse' button on the fascia
or if you want to quickly do a spin simply long press the 'spin' button on the front of the washing machine
- cool eh?

That's my view of this new washing machine - if you have anything to add or ask please comment - thank you for reading.

I'm about to buy a new washing machine . initially I was thinking to buy a samsung washer dryer or just a samsung washing machine around £400 to £600 range but after some research I realized there has been lots of problem with their Drum Spider arm corrosion right after their warranty expires . Then I decided to go for german models which they are also expensive such as Bosch but i'm not sure how reliable and good they are nowadays compare to korean one such as samsung . I know Bosch is one of the top brands but are they still produce the good quality washing machine ? Also is there any other good brands out there within my budget range ?

Anyone have an advice or recommendation?

LG washing machine review, model WM14225FD

LG are fairly new in the UK washing machine market. They have a reputation for being quiet. LG washing machines look well made. The WM14225FD has a 7.5Kg drum which is very big. If you don’t wash for a family though it is too big, and small loads may not spin if they can’t be balanced – especially items such as jeans, heavy jumpers, towels and sheets.

The LG WM14225FD looks good, it plays nice tunes when you turn it on and has a very big drum which (if you utilise it properly) will mean more washing in less loads, which not only saves on water, electricity and detergent, but on wear and tear on the washing machine itself.

LG have pioneered the Direct Drive, where instead of a motor connected via a belt to the drum pulley, the motor is built into the drum pulley and turns the drum directly. This is supposed to result in a more stable and much quieter washing machine.

The LG washing machine is easy to work on from a repairman;'s point of view and looks like a decent product.

	WHAT I DISLIKE ABOUT IT

The soap dispenser drawer was disappointingly flimsy

	SUMMARY

If a quiet washing machine is high on your priorities then LG’s direct drive is very quiet for the price. It looks a decent washing machine but servicing may not be as easy to obtain as it would be for washing machines that have been made for decades in the UK.

	SERVIS M6011S WASHING MACHINE REVIEW

This washing machine looks surprisingly solid and is heavy. It’s a budget washing machine though and the weight is mostly accounted for by the heavy concrete tub weights. The kick strip at the front base of the washing machine rattles and suffers from vibration on spin on the one I tested.

This washing machine has a pump filter but no pump filter drain hose ( a small rubber tube with an end stop, where you can drain the water into a bowl if it ever breaks down full of water) You can at least regularly check and clean the filter, but those that don’t will have difficulty not flooding the kitchen if they want to remove and clean a blocked filter that has resulted in a washing machine full of water.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT

The Servis M6011S has a nice control display and selector switch, which is simple to use. Its 1100 spin speed is slow by today’s standards but it was perfectly adequate for us all during the 1980s and 1100 is more stable and quieter. The suspension seems solid for the price and the pump is also surprisingly quiet.

WHAT I DISLIKE ABOUT IT

One piece cabinet makes major repairs more difficult but to be honest at this washing machine’s price (less than £200) it’s probably not going to be an issue. That is, as with many other washing machines these days, anything major going wrong results in the washing machine being scrapped as it’s almost as expensive to fix than to replace. Servis have now gone bust anyway!

HOTPOINT FEW10 WASHING MACHINE REVIEW (FIRST EDITION)

Some of this review is the same as another washing machine review on the main Washerhelp site as the machines are very similar. The FEW10 washing machine is virtually the same washing machine Hotpoint have produced for many years, which in turn was little different from the Hotpoint washing machines produced for several years previous too.

If you have had a Hotpoint washing machine before and the model number started with 95, 99, WM or WD then this washing machine isn't really much different although there are definitely some improvements.

(Hotpoint currently sell another range of washing machines where the model number starts with WMA. These are different to the WM and WD ranges.

One of my biggest criticisms of many washing machine manufacturers is that instead of sticking to a design and slowly tweaking it, they constantly redesign washing machines from scratch. This introduces constant teething problems and prevents developing a tried and tested washing machine.

So after sticking with the same fundamental design for so long, have Hotpoint managed to develop this type of washing machine into one of the best around? Well unfortunately Hotpoint are in a price war with many other similarly priced washing machines so they seem more concerned with producing just a decent washing machine that will sell competitively in their chosen price range rather than producing the best they can - which would potentially double the selling price..

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT

It looks nice.

WHAT I DISLIKE ABOUT IT

On the noisy side and moves around on spin. If you wash lots of small loads you may get extra noise as Hotpoint washing machines appear prone to letting the odd un- balanced loads go into spin, which results in a bit of thumping about. How do I avoid out of balanced loads in my washing machine?
No water pump filter, or pump filter drain hose. This is unnaceptable. Hotpoint washing machines have a hidden filter inside the sump hose which gets clogged up with lint. This causes breakdowns that most customers will need to phone an engineer out for, whereas most other washing machine owners have the option of draining the washing machine and clearing the filter themselves from the front.
AEG LAVAMAT LW1450 WASHING MACHINE REVIEW

Looking inside the AEG LW1450 I can tell it is very similar to the Zanussi washing machines. AEG are slightly above Zanussi in quality but not that much. However, both washing machines are made by Electrolux.

This is a well made and solid washing machine. It’s quiet and stable on spin. It has a nice clean and simple design and controls. The control panel information is protected behind a plastic front which will keep it clean and protected.

The soap dispenser drawer is large and solid.

THINGS I DISLIKE ABOUT IT

The tub weights (which all washing machines have) are concrete and concrete tub weights tend to be susceptible to cracking and disintegrating over time although it’s mostly the cheaper washing machines that tend to suffer from this. Hopefully the quality of the material used here is better. Cast iron tub weights are best, but normally only fitted to the high end quality washing machines such as Miele (RELATED INFORMATION: Miele washing machines build quality review)

THINGS I LIKE ABOUT IT

Very good build quality and nice clean, simple control design. It’s made in Germany where engineering quality us renowned. The washing machine is very easy to use

The water pump is nice and quiet. Many cheap washing machines have extremely noisy water pumps which is quite annoying.

SUMMARY

A well made washing machine. Recommended. The only caveat is (as with all the German washing machines) the price of parts and repairs tend to be higher.
INDESIT WIL163 WASHING MACHINE REVIEW

This washing machine has a 1600 spin speed which is frankly much too fast for a budget washing machine. It just doesn't have the quality of build and suspension to allow a stable and quiet top spin. The washing machine is noisy and moves around a lot on smooth floors. Hoses, and the pressure switch tube inside the machine flapp frantically against the casing on spin and can't be stopped.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT

Well it's cheap so you can't dislike the price. It also has a stainless outer tub which bizarrely only usually happens on the high end quality washing machines. Having said that, I've seen several of these tubs leaking after a few years so clearly it's not a quality tub.

The dispenser hose leading from the soap dispenser into the drum has been improved. It's wider in circumference now. They used to be prone to blocking with soap powder and detergent tablets causing water to cascade down the front of the washing machine out of the soap drawer.

WHAT I DISLIKE ABOUT IT

Noisy and moves around on spin. If it goes wrong out of guarantee the cost of repairs could easily write the washer off. Budget quality parts.

COMMON FAULTS

Drum bearing failure. Control board faults.

SUMMARY

Buy cheap, buy often. Also, don't expect it to be quiet. 1600 RPM is way too fast for such a budget washing machine.
HOTPOINT WF860 WASHING MACHINE REVIEW

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

This washing machine has a top speed of 1600 rpm and has a large 6Kg drum. It has a nice digital display that informs you of the time left to complete the program as well as the temperature and spin speed settings. You can manually adjust both the spin speed and the temperature of the wash. There is a delay start timer if you are willing to take the chance of letting a washing machine wash while you are out, or in bed.

The 6 Kg drum is handy if you have a lot of washing, but the current Hotpoint washing machine range does seem to have problems with smaller awkward loads and can thump around a bit if you put small loads in with a few heavy items in. The electronic controls are not supposed to let any out of balance load go into spin, but they seem to let the smaller bad load slip though at times. ( RELATED ADVICE: How do I avoid out of balanced loads in washing machine? )

NOISE LEVELS

This washing machine is promoted as super quiet. On wash it certainly is. Eerily quiet in fact as all you can hear is the water splashing about. However, these washing machines are not super quiet on spin. They are just as noisy as most other cheap to middle quality washing machines.

THINGS I LIKE

The heater and thermostats are at the back of the tub for easy access during repairs. Nice electronic display and controls. Nice door and handle design.

THINGS I DISLIKE

The new control module can give an electric shock up to 5 minutes after the washing machine has been unplugged. This could be nasty for any DIY washing machine repairers who will be unaware of this.

The door seal clamp that holds the seal onto the tub is rubbish. It’s not that it isn’t likely to do the job properly, it’s just very awkward to replace once removed. No doubt there’s a “special” tool available, but using just narrow-nosed pliers is a pain.

No water pump filter! This is ridiculous. All washing machines should have a customer drainable and clearable filter and not having one is enough to prevent me buying such a machine even if everything else was great. Most washing machines get obstructions in them sooner or later which jams the water pump. Without a pump drain hose and pump filter, most people will have to call out a repair engineer for something they should be able to fix themselves. ( RELATED ADVICE: washing machine water pumps )

SUMMARY

Very quiet on wash, but not so quiet on spin. Nice looking - but looks aren’t everything - and no easily accessible pump filter, which is unforgivable.

There are more (much more comprehensive) washing machine reviews on the main Washerhelp web site
