Experience With Anti-vibration Pads

Hi I have a new Hoover Nextra (washer and dryer). The washer has the "turbine" noise as the speed goes up (or down) and the dryer has a rough vibration - kind of like a turning flat tire. These are stacked on top of each other. For my sake and the sake of the people below me, I would like to quiet the machine if possible. I have seen a company that claims anti-vibration pads: http://gviinc.net/ Has anybody had experience with these or other pads that claim the same affect of reducing washer / dryer noise? Any other tips? THanks

Is It Worth Repairing?

Hi all.. One issue I haven't seen either on the forums or the website is a general guide on when to give up on trying to repair a washer and go for a new one. Is there any general concensus on this issue, or do you think it can only be decided on a case by case basis? Of course.. this abstract question is leading on to my own problems I recently had to replace the motor on my Hotpoint WD52, and when I say "I", I mean the repair man as I heeded the warnings aimed at novice electricians. Now a couple of months on, I have the feeling something is wrong because the machine wobbles on the spin cycle even with an empty load. The choice I'm faced with is a second repair that …

Advice On Quietest Washing Machine

My washing machine is currently upstairs (no room in kitchen downstairs). The whole house shakes when it is on the spin cycle (I've tried those anti-vibration things but they don't seem to work) and I'm always really worried it will leak into the room downstairs. I've got to buy a new washing machine so what would you recommend as the best bet in terms of quietness and least flood risk? is there anything else I chould do to reduce the shaking and risk of flooding? quietest

Hi All, I have a good quality AEG LAVAMAT that has lasted 6 years so far. The seal got slightly damaged (shirt got caught and slight tear in seal). This resulted in a leak (thank god we were in the house when it happened). My question is whether to buy a new machine or get the seal replaced about £80. Is 6 years a good run for an AEG? Or should we just count our losses and use the money toward a new AEG or is it worth getting it repaired? The seal has smelt for a while (we did not remember to do a service wash) and I also wonder if this may have affected other parts of the machine. Very happy with AEG by the way, the damage was purely human error. It has also reminded…

Loading Washing Machine

I read on the washerhelp site that you should do a full load but leave a 3 or 4 inch gap at the top. That's what I do. My ariston washer has a 6 kg capacity, but each load I do is about 5-5.5 kilograms when leaving a 3 or 4 inch gap at the top. Would you say that i'm doing about the right size load in each wash?

Should I Buy Top Loading Machine?

I am looking to buy a top loading Whirlpool washer as I want the large capicity but I've noticed that the spin speed is only 450-650 - will this be sufficient for cottons- towels, jeans etc or will I end up spending more on drying - I am presuming the spin speed is low because of the larger drum - any help on this gratefully received!

Does Calgon Make Sense Financially?

Since I am investing in a Miele (rather expensive for me) I was thinking of protecting it from the hardwater in my area by using Calgon or similar product. Andy has, as most of you are probably aware has written a quite indepth piece on hard water / limescale / Calgon Hard water & limescale in washing machines I did a rough calculation on a £9.99 50 tablet pack of Calgon (which I bought yesterday) and projected annual usage came to £60-£70 even assuming a bottom figure of £60 while not 'excessive' per year, when viewed from a 10 year standpoint it's £600.... which is enough to buy another entry level Miele washing machine! Assuming the heating element can last 10 y…

Should Washing Come Out Cold Or Hot?

Our washing machine is about 6 years old now (only a Candy), and I just want to know if it's normal for clothes to come out of the machine ice cold or if it's heater has gone! I can't remember if they were ever warm when I took them out, but noticed today - it was on a 40 deg wash. Many thanks.

Is anyone a bit of a plumber? Currently got hot and cold plumbed in, do I simply rotate the taps from the vertical handle position... I assume clockwise, and that will stop the water so I can disconnect the old Philips washing machine? - Or do I have to use the master stop cock thingy? The big fat 'concertina' pipe I take it is the waste pipe, do I simply remove this, or do I need to stop up/cover the aperture in the sink afterwards incase water flows out when I use the sink? I have to disconnect the old unit (Dixons terms and conditions) Dixons will then plumb my new Miele in, but presumably the Miele is cold only fill, so the hot water pipe will be unused - does i…

Hoover Performa 1100 Manual Wanted

Hi, I've just recently acquired a Hoover Performa 1100. Can anyboby tell me what this machine should do whilst drying? On both drying cycles the machine heats up but only seems to turn a couple of times each couple of minutes, so the clothes seems to come out full of steam and not fully dry. Should the dry cycle consist of the drum turning all the time whilst drying? Also does anyone know where I can obtain a free Hoover Performa 1100 manual (pdf etc) Thanks in advance. Jim Curtis

Running A Washer On A Cold Feed Only
by leecs1980- 1 follower

We currently own a washer with both hot and cold water feeds which is running like this in the current position in our kitchen. We are thinking of moving the washer into one of our out buildings where there already is running water and drainage. However, to do this we would need to run it on a cold feed only using a 'y' piece into both inlets. The only concerns I have about doing this is that the water will not get up to temperature in enough time, particularly at this time of year when the cold water is REALLY cold. I would imagine that the problem would be on 60 and 90 degree washes. Has anyone got any experience of running a washer like this and can give me an ans…

Economy And Home Brand Detergents

Hi everyone, newbie here! I've always wondered, is there really any difference, apart from packaging/scents between Economy; home brand and well known brand detergents? I currently use Morrisons Cyclon Liquid 2 in 1 detergent, simply because I like the traditional smell it leaves on my clothes (think 1980's Ariel Automatic). I have used all sorts over the years though, but always tend to sway more towards the home-brands as they're cheaper and seem to clean well (I never have really dirty laundry, so...) I'd be interested to hear others opinions on this matter. Morgan

Ive just bought my first washer dryer and hope to get years and years of active service from it. the manual says to reduce the load by half when drying, which is fine, but a bit inconvenient....is this really necessary, or can I simply double the recommended drying time. i do wonder how many people actually follow this guidance!!!!

No Instruction Manual For Hoover Softwave 1100

Hello, can anyone help me? I have recently inherited a washing machine when moving into a new flat and not only is there no user manual but pretty much all the writing is missing from the front of the machine. I have no idea what the various buttons do. I've risked a couple of washes but things are shrinking - obviously on a hot setting. Does anyone have a manual? Can someone send me a picture of the buttons complete with writing? Or am I destined to wear small clothes for the rest of my stay here? Thanks for reading.

Stand Alone/free Standing
by lallies- 1 reply

I've had a twin tub machine for years but now it might be wearing out. I've seen machines described as stand alone (or is it free standing) but I can't find any information about how they function. Pictures of them look like ordinary front loaders. What I want to know is are they a sort of halfway house between twin tubs (which need constant supervision), and automatics which follow a program. Do they need to be "plumbed in" like automatics? Can anybody advise me or point me towards advice please?

Eco / Wash Balls?
by skegness- 6 replies

There are quite a few 'wash-ball' type products on the market thesedays, all of which go in with the wash: * Magnetic wash-ball, German I think, I recently got one from Sainsburys (£3.99), supposed to reduce lime-scale build up and (I think) the amount of detergent you need to put in. * Eco-balls, cost about £35 for three, supposed to eliminate need for detergents and conditioner for the main wash altogether (by introducing ionised oxygen into the wash to lift dirt). One set supposed to last 1000 washes, from what I've seen on the web some people seem to like them though one person said they had one break and the pellets clogged his m/c... * Wash balls, seen them on a…

Hard Water
by catastrophe wife- 4 replies

I live in a hard water area and I have been in the habit of adding water softener products (Calgon and the like) to my wash. Last year I moved to a new build block of flats and I have discovered that everyone's water supply has a Liff Softest Magnetic Descaler fitted. After I moved to this address, I kept getting white patches on my washing that would not wash out if I washed or rinsed again, so I figured that it was not the usual laundry product deposits. The stains were so stubborn I concluded they were bleach splatters from the upstairs balcony. Eventually I found a way of getting these marks off, by using a solution of 50:50 vinegar and water, or neat vinegar for the…
