Washing machine manufacturers call out & labour charges

Although this page refers to washing machine repairs, the telephone numbers, web site links and charges listed are likely to be the same for most or all of their other appliances.

Call out & labour charges by the washing machine manufacturers

This information may help in deciding which make of washing machine to buy if you want to consider future potential repair costs as part of the buying decision. It will also help in deciding whether to use the manufacturer or not if you currently have a faulty washing machine that needs repair [ Related: Should I use the manufacturer or an independent repairer? ]

These prices were quoted to me by the manufacturer's call centre operators and are meant as a rough guide to the differences in charges between the popular washing machine manufacturers in the UK. The prices are clearly subject to change, and I update them whenever I find out they have changed. They can't be relied upon for anything but a rough comparison. However, it is very interesting to see the different repair charges. Please double check prices before making an appointment.

AEG, Electrolux, Tricity Bendix, Zanussi washing machine repairs

All these washing machines are part of the Electrolux group. The manufacturer charges were -

  • AEG washing machine £68 + VAT and any parts
  • Electrolux £55 + VAT and any parts
  • Tricity Bendix £58 + VAT and any parts
  • Zanussi was £58 + VAT and any parts

(All these charges reduced to £45 + VAT if you don't proceed with the repair)

NOTE: Having received an email from a Washerhelp user saying she'd been quoted £91 we telephoned again but found the different options a little confusing to say the least. They said the figures we quote are still charged but it seems it depends on verious circumstances what you get quoted and there's even talk about an insurance scheme and average quotes..

Contact telephone number for repairs to Electrolux, AEG-Electrolux, Zanussi, Tricity Bendix or Zanussi appliances is 08445 616616 - NOTE: If this number is busy you can get redirected to an agent instead.

Bosch, Neff, Siemens and Gaggenau washing machine repairs

BOSH:

The current charge was £85.00 + Parts (£95 inside the M25).

Bosch manufacturer's service telephone number : 0844 892 8979 - Bosch Customer Service page

NOTE: Make sure you have the Enr number and the Fd number from your Bosch washing machine before calling the service number. They should be available from the rating plate of the machine. The automatic message you hear when calling this number advises you to hang up and call back later if you do not have these numbers.

NEFF:

Quoted £85 inc vat but plus parts. No reduction if repair not carried out. Neff service number 0844 892 8989

Siemens:

The current charge was quoted as £85 inc vat but plus parts. No reduction if repair not carried out.

Alternative offer was to pay £189 for a service plan, which can be paid for over 10 months (£18.90 x 10mths). I'm presuming this would get the washing machine fixed and then covered for 12 months. The washing machine has to be out of warranty but under 8yrs old to qualify. The plan covers all parts, labour and call out up to £250 and once covered, if repair comes to over £250 you get a new machine and the service plan in cancelled.

Siemens manufacturer's service telephone number : 0844 892 8999

GAGGENAU:

£89.90 for the first 1/2 hour inc vat but plus parts. If repair takes over over 1/2 hour it's £6.80 for every 6mins. No price reduction if repair not carried out which makes for an expensive estimate.

Ariston, Indesit, Hotpoint, Creda washing machine repairs

All these washing machines are owned by Merloni which is now referred to as The Indesit Company. Manufacturer repair charges for Ariston, Indesit, Hotpoint and Creda washing machine repairs were -

London

  • Appliances 2 to 5 years old: £104.97 - including parts, labour and VAT (should be covered by their 5 year parts guarantee)
  • 5 to 8 years old: £114.97 - including parts, labour and VAT
  • Over 8 years old: £124.97 -including parts, labour and VAT

Outside London

  • Appliance under 5 years old: £99.98 (including parts, labour and VAT - should be covered by their 5 year parts guarantee)
  • 5 to 10 years old: £109.98 (including parts, labour and VAT)
  • Over 10 years old: £119.98 (including parts, labour and VAT)

There is potential to get decent value for money out of a repair if your engineer fits an expensive part but if he writes it off saying it's beyond economical repair the charge is exactly the same. When I queried this the operator seemed suitably embarrassed but claimed it's not too likely to happen. I've no idea what criteria is used to decide whether to go ahead and fix the appliance or not but it's the engineer who decides, and it means an estimate charge is exactly the same as the charge for carrying out extensive repairs. To be fair though, on Hotpoint's web site they do say, "Fixed price. No hidden extras - No matter how long it takes or how many parts we fit", so this strongly suggests it is unlikely that they won't fix the appliance. In fact it implies they will always fix it.

A range of payment options: They appear to offer the ability to spread the cost of a repair, "from as little as £12.99 per month, Interest free", and to, "optionally protect your whole appliance for a year for just a few pence a day".

Telephone number : 0844 822 4224

Note: Don't forget that if you have a 5 year parts guarantee and your appliance is under 5 years old, then the parts should be free if using the manufacturer's engineer [ I have a 5 year parts guarantee - should I use it? ]

Hoover Candy washing machine repairs

Hoover CandyTo repair a Hoover or Candy washing machine was £109 including VAT. However, unlike many other manufacturers, if you don't go ahead with the repair the charge would not be reduced.

Don't forget that if you have a 5 year parts guarantee on your Hoover or Candy appliance and it's under 5 years old then using their engineer will mean the parts should be free.[ I have a 5 year parts guarantee - should I use it? ] Hoover or Candy telephone number: 08444 99 55 99 -

Miele washing machine repairs

MieleTo repair a Miele washing machine was £98 (inc VAT, but plus any parts) which covers the first hour (and should cover most repairs). If you don't pay immediately after completion and the engineer has to leave an invoice an additional £5 is added to the initial hours labour.

If the repair takes longer than an hour then additional charges time that may be required is charged at £60 per hour - broken into 15 minute blocks (presumably £15 per 15 minutes). Miele do appear to be the only manufacturer charging for longer than an hour though this is a premium quality brand and high quality service can't come cheap. I would think most repairs would take less than an hour though.

If repair is not carried out (Estimate) the charge was £60.81 (inc vat). Miele service telephone number : 08707 554466

(All prices and tel no's correct at April 2010 - please contact me if they have changed)

Dyson washing machine repairs

Despite my fondness for the Dyson washing machine it's no longer being made. Dyson can still look after them though. To repair a Dyson washing machine was £95 including parts, labour and VAT. However, if one requires a new drum they are no longer available (this is the unique contra-rotating drum). In this circumstance there would be no charge. Dyson service telephone number : 08706 002701

Servis washing machine repairs

Unfortunately Servis UK went into administration. Their telephone number still worked when I rang, but there's a message saying Servis UK are in administration and apologising for any inconvenience. If you press the right options (option 2 and then option 2 again) you eventually get transferred through to Domestic and General. However, Domestic & General are an insurance company responsible for much of the UK's extended warranties so they can't directly fix your Servis appliance if it's still under the manufacturer's guarantee. What they are offering is to sell you a policy for £159 and give you a years maintenance cover. For this price they will include fixing your current fault using one of their repair dealers although I'm not sure if there are limits to how much of a fault they ware prepared to include.

If your Servis appliance is still under the manufacturer's guarantee, unfortunately you have no option but to contact the retailer you bought it from as they are responsible under the Sale Of Goods Act. They should either arrange for it to be repaired or replace it.

LG washing machine repairs

Strangely, LG quoted £159 inc vat to fix appliance and supply a service agreement for 12mths which covers parts and labour. The first payment is deferred. If machine turns out to be not repairable then the service agreement is cancelled. Unlimited call out during 12mths.

Once the service contract is in force any subsequent fault that renders it "un-repairable" during the 12 months will result in them supplying a new machine and the service agreement being cancelled.
