  1. The knob is likely to be broken or cracked otherwise it couldn't move out of line. If you put the dryer on with the drum full of water the machine should know there is water inside and not try to tumble dry. Just turn the knob a little more until you get it to pump out the water.
  2. The number 1 cause of the motor not turning is worn carbon brushes, but not all washing machine motors have carbon brushes in their motors, and there are multiple other possible causes too. The article I linked to before covers all my advice on this fault and contains relevant links.
  3. Is the fault essentially that the drum is not turning at all on any cycle? (ie the motor isn't running). If so try this article Washing machine drum not turning
  4. Whatever the string does when it opens the door, the door open button or door catch should be doing. You have to operate the door open mechanism and work out why it isn't pulling on the bit that the string is pulling on to open it.
  5. If it didn't cost too much it might not be worth pursuing as if the independent engineer agreed it was damp it would end up being a costly thing. If he said it wasn't related you would need the original company to admit a big mistake, or take them to the small claims court if they didn't.

  7. Does the door only not open at the end of a cycle or will it not open at all without the string? If it won't open without the string it must be some mechanical problem with the door mechanism. if it opens OK but just not at the end of a cycle I'd suspect a possible pressure system blockage if there is a system in place to stop the door opening with water inside. A blocked pressue system can trap air in the pressure chamber and make the machine think water is inside when it isn't. But it could be aborting due to a different fault.
  8. Damp isn't good for appliances though it usually takes its toll on them gradually over a much longer period. Damp could short something out if it was really bad. It's possible they could be jumping to conclusions having seen the damp (why didn't they warn you about it when they delivered the machine?) but their advice not to have it fixed until the damp is sorted appears genuine.
  9. Unfortunately they have blamed damp and it is likely to be very difficult to prove otherwise. Presumably you had a washing machine there before for some time and it worked OK? Without an independant engineer to look at it you can't easily challenge it especially if they've taken the old part away. What were the symptoms?
  10. Yes hot water can be very inefficient in domestic washing machines. Especially in the UK where many houses have hot water stored in a large cylinder in the airing cupboard upstairs. I have a very comprehensive article about the subject which explains everything in detail. If particularly interested the comments contain many other interesting details and arguments but there were so many comments I had to trim a lot down and close them. Here is the article Cold fill verses Hot fill washing machines In a nutshell the main problem is that by the time the washing machine starts to get fed hot water it is almost full anyway because they don't use much water any more. Hot water drawn into long pipe runs quickly cools down and is wasted. For example in my house if I want hot water (even at the bathroom sink) it takes around 1 minute before the tap supplies anything but cold water. Downstairs at my washing machine it is even worse. Therefore as I have a modern washing machine it is totally inefficient at using hot water. Having said all that, if the washing machine was sophisticated enough it could deal with this, but it would not be an easy problem to solve and would considerably increase the cost of washing machines. Manufacturers don't currently think it's a problem worth solving. Some washing machines may be very close to the hot water supply and not really subject to much of a pipe run between washing machine and water supply. Others may have combination boilers which might be set up efficiently and start to supply hot water to the washing machine quite quickly. These washing machines could utilise hot water and it would help to reduce running costs. Basically washing machine manufacturers decided to design for the lowest common denominator and they just got rid of the hot water valves. This means that most people will get a more efficient machine, but some people, especially those with solar heated hot water, will not benefit from their hot water supply. Some Miele washing machines do have a hot water valve. There may even still be some other brands that have a hot water valve. Most of them if not all of them though only use the hot water valve on the very hot water settings such as boil wash or anything over 60°. Therefore if you are mostly washing on 40° washes, in my opinion and in my experience, hot water valve is next to useless for most people.
  11. The first thing I would check is the wall socket and plug to make sure there isn't a dodgy connection. Try wiggling the plug around when it's on to see if the display cuts out.
  12. Sorry Ajazahmeduk I found it tricky to work out what your problem was with the description - do you mean the door is jammed shut and you can't open the door unless you use some string? If so and a new door interlock hasn't fixed it I'd have to suspect the door catch on the door Washing Machine Door Will Not Open
  13. Yes it is fortunate you were in. My advice has always been to never leave any washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer running when no one is in the house or everyone is in bed - make no mistake these appliances cause a lot of house fires and people generally still don't seem to get that. Washing machines can suffer from pressure system faults (mostly blockages of gunge) that can allow the washing machine's heating element to come on with no water inside the machine. These days they all have plastic outer tubs which makes things worse. To my knowledge there are no built in safety devices to quickly counter this such as trip switches on the element. I don't understand why!!
  14. Hello Pat. One of the things that makes the exploding door glass issue so remarkable is that the door glass in washing machines does not normally break. It is relatively thick and shouldn't ever need replacing normally. The fact that they don't supply the door glass as a separate part seems in line with that thought. Many manufacturers only supply a complete door these days, which again is becoming more and more common. Many parts are now becoming unavailable as separate parts. One of the worst examples is that some fridges have no replaceable door seals and if the door seal becomes torn or worn you have to replace the entire door, which as you can imagine is considerably more expensive. I would think it impossible to get a third-party door glass. Third-party companies profit by copying parts and are only interested in making parts that will sell big quantities. There are many parts that hardly ever get sold and they would be crazy to manufacture the door glass as they would make no profit whatsoever.
  15. Hello Duncan. It's a great shame because the Miele washing machine is substantially superior in every way to a Beko machine. The problem ironically is that the Miele is so well-made that it is very heavy and needs to be on a solid floor. Miele themselves say that their washing machines need to be ideally on a concrete floor or a reinforced floor. Ours is in our garage on a concrete floor and when it goes into spin it just doesn't move, and even when I once had several boxes balanced on top of it and it went into full spin none of them moved at all which is remarkable. During spin the outer drum inside has to move with the centrifugal force of the laundry being spun at high speeds. This movement is absorbed as much as possible by the suspension but inevitably you have a large metal box with a drum bouncing around inside and this creates movement and vibration. If you have it on relatively thin and springy joists that are often upstairs then these sounds can get amplified. Just make sure you have removed all the transit packing from the machine. You'd be surprised how many times that as happened. If the transit packing is not removed then the washing machine will seriously move about and vibrate.
